Rover 3.9l V8

This engine is from a 1990 Range Rover and came equipped with EFI, which I sold for $150 on eBay. Bonus!

You can identify the engine's compression ratio by the stamp in the block under the heads on the left side of the engine (left from behind the engine). There will also be an engine number you can use to get more information. Here is a link to engine numbers.

All of the parts for rebuild have been purchased online at the cheapest prices I could find.

Main and rod bearings – eBay for $40
Complete piston ring set – eBay $150 shipped
Water pump for Buick 300 – eBay for $35
Gasket kit for Buick 215 – CSK auto for $65
Timing gear and chain and gaskets not compatible from the Buick kit (including head gasket and valley pan) – British Pacific for around $75

Also purcahsed a Buick Skylark 4bbl intake from somebody on the internet for $100.

I welded up my own engine mount adapters using 1/4" steel so that I could attach the stock rubber mounts to the Rover.

The engine came partially taken apart, so it was easy to get started. In this picture you can almost make out the stamp on in the bottom middle of this side of the engine.

The bearings showed some wear, but overall not bad. I shouldn't need to have the crank turned. All passages were clear, and the cylinders still have the cross-hatch from the factory.

The crank is in excellent condition.

I am keeping things as organized as possible. The pistons, rods, valves and heads are all in excellent condition.

This is the Buick 4bbl intake. It's been media blasted on the outside and came out very clean but I still need to clean out the intake passages.

I am using an Edelbrock 500CFM carb purchased from eBay. ($50!)

The completed engine sits waiting to go in the car. As of now, I am using the stock front timing cover and water pump. I will decide after the test fitting whether I will change it for a Buick 215 cover.
